What are Wisdom Teeth?
The wisdom teeth are the very last set of teeth that erupt in your mouth. They are a third set of molars that are located near the back of your oral cavity. While many people have four wisdom teeth, there are individuals with more or less than that. The wisdom teeth typically appear during the late teenage or early adult years.
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
If your wisdom teeth are able to erupt normally and aren’t causing any troublesome symptoms, then there’s no need to remove them at all. Unfortunately, it’s all too common for wisdom teeth to be unable to emerge properly due to a lack of space. Consequently, they can become impacted (meaning they’re trapped under the gums) and lead to all kinds of problems.
Some of the issues associated with wisdom teeth include pain toward the back of the mouth, infections, an increased risk of tooth decay, and your other teeth becoming misaligned. Noticing any of these symptoms warrants scheduling an appointment at our office to find out whether a wisdom tooth extraction is needed.
What to Expect from the Wisdom Teeth Procedure
As long as your wisdom teeth have at least partially erupted, we may be able to remove them with a simple extraction process. This means loosening the teeth in question until they can be taken out of the mouth. A fully impacted wisdom tooth will need to be removed through surgical means, and it may even have to be divided into separate sections for the removal process.
Recovering from Wisdom Teeth Extraction
When teeth are taken out of your mouth, blood clots form in the sockets in order to aid with the healing process. Dislodging these blood clots can lead to discomfort and other problems, so you will need to keep them safe until your mouth has healed. To do so, avoid drinking through a straw, smoking, or touching the extraction site.
During your recovery, make sure that you’ve stocked up on plenty of soft foods; you will need to stay away from hard or crunchy foods for a while. Additionally, you’ll need to avoid strenuous physical activity for at least a week, so plan on getting plenty of rest.
