What’s on your summer to-do list? Maybe you’re celebrating someone close to you who’s finally graduating from high school or college. Perhaps you’re gearing up for a cross-country vacation to your favorite beach or state park. You might even be planning a nice, relaxing staycation at home—there are all sorts of ways to spend the summer season! That said, regardless of what you find yourself doing this summer, taking great care of your smile is a must; so here are some useful tips from your dentist to help you out!

Tip #1. Stay Hydrated

Summer is often the harbinger of warmer weather, and it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day and drink plenty of water to keep cool. But did you know that water provides some pretty spectacular benefits for your teeth? First of all, it stimulates your mouth’s flow of saliva, which is your first line of defense against cavities. Secondly, tap water often has fluoride added to it, which greatly benefits the enamel layer of your teeth. And finally, water doesn’t contain the sugars or acids that are found in other beverages like sodas, sports drinks, or juices, making it the most health-conscious choice.

Tip #2. If You’re Traveling, Pack the Essentials

If you’re planning to travel this summer, don’t forget to bring a dental kit with you to ensure that no matter where you are or what you’re doing, caring for your smile isn’t a problem at all! This kit doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but at least be sure to include the essentials: a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, and if you have oral appliances like braces, anything you’ll need to care for teeth on the go such as dental wax or over-the-counter pain relievers. Even if you’re not planning to travel, be sure you have everything you need at home—summer break does not mean taking a break from your personal hygiene!

Tip #3. Schedule a Preventive Dental Checkup

You should be visiting your dentist twice a year for routine preventive care, and since summer conveniently falls right in the middle of the calendar year, it’s actually an ideal opportunity for knocking out one of these checkups. These visits grant your provider the chance to inspect your smile and ensure that there aren’t any lurking problems that might threaten your pearly whites while you’re out enjoying yourself. They’ll also clean your teeth thoroughly, ensuring that they look dazzling for every single photo opportunity. And if there is a problem that needs to be resolved, summer also provides an adequate window for treatment!
